Ivory Coast exported 173,491 metric tons of rubber in January-October, up 5,017 tons or 3% on 168,474 tons shipped in the same period last year, official port data showed Monday.
Follows a table of rubber exports in metric tons, with in the last two columns the season's cumulative totals.
| Oct 09 | Oct 08 | Cum 09 | Cum 08 |
Rubber | 25,430 | 18,531 | 173,491 | 168,474 |
The port of San Pedro exported 11,965 tons while Abidjan exported 13,465 tons. Last year, the ports exported 7,166 tons and 11,365 tons respectively.
Ivory Coast is Africa's leading rubber producer.
A recent report by the Interprofessional fund for agricultural research, or Firca, found 64% of rubber farms were less than six years old. Trees start producing in their seventh year.
Rubber farms are increasingly popular in Ivory Coast, particularly as investment projects for those who often have no experience of farming.
Industry officials in charge of promoting rubber production are aiming for 450,000 hectares of rubber farms by 2025, producing 600,000 tons annually.(Source: http://irco.biz)
