Malaysia produced 77,620 tonnes of natural rubber (NR) in October, an increase of 0.5 per cent over the previous month and 16.7 per cent year-on-year.
The estate sector contributed only 6.1 per cent of total production while the share from the smallholding sector was 93.9 per cent, said the Statistics Department in its latest summary of rubber statistics today.
It said 82,181 tonnes of Malaysian NR was exported in October 2009, an increase of 73.8 per cent over September 2009 and 26.6 per cent year-on-year.
Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) accounted for 94.5 per cent of total exports, and the largest share of the total SMR exported came from SMR 20 at 42.5 per cent.
NR imports in October 2009 were 74,557 tonnes, an increase of 24.7 per cent over the previous month and 85.0 per cent year-on-year.
Latex concentrate was the main type of rubber imported in October 2009, accounting for 41.0 per cent of total imports.
Total imports of NR was 592,903 tonnes in January-October 2009, an increase of 34.6 per cent when compared to the same period in 2008. For this period, 66.4 per cent of the imports of NR was from Thailand while the share of imports from Indonesia and Vietnam was 7.9 per cent and 5.0 per cent respectively.
Domestic consumption of NR in October 2009 was 41,365 tonnes, an increase of 11.2 per cent over September 2009 and 14.6 per cent year-on-year.
Rubber gloves was the major NR consuming industry at 65.0 per cent, followed by rubber thread 12.4 per cent and tyre and tubes 10.0 per cent. These three industries together consumed 87.4 percent (36,170 tonnes) of NR in October 2009.
At the end of October 2009, total stocks of NR held was 145,582 tonnes, an increase of 1.4 per cent over the previous month and 3.3 per cent year-on-year.
In October 2009, the average monthly price of latex concentrate was 483.89 sen, an increase of 2.3 per cent over September 2009 and 5.7 per cent year-on-year.
The total number of persons engaged in rubber estates in October 2009 was 10,350. There were 10,347 paid employees with total salaries and wages amounting to RM8.9 million
Month-on-month, the total number of persons engaged decreased by 0.5 per cent, while year-on-year, a contraction of 6.1 per cent was recorded.
In October 2009, the ratio of total production to total area tapped was 121.7 kg per hectare.
Compared with September 2009, productivity showed a drop of 1.1 per cent, while year-on-year, an increase of 20 per cent was recorded.
