Cameroon's 2009 rubber output could rise 8.1% on the 53,477 metric tons produced in 2008, the finance ministry said a report made available to journalists Thursday, which is lower than earlier forecasts.
"In 2009, markets for this product have been affected by the downswing of the automobile industry, which has led to a fall in the demand for rubber for car tires. Increase in production [of rubber] would thus be of a lesser magnitude of 8.1%," the report said.
At the beginning of the year, the finance ministry had expected 2009 rubber production of 56,835 metric tons.
Referring to 2008 output, the report said: "Thanks to favorable factors, climate, production tools, and high world market prices, production of natural rubber increased by 14.3% to stand at 53,477 tons in 2008."
Cameroon's annual rubber harvests typically stand at between 47,000-60,000 tons, according to government figures.
In 2007, the West African nation produced 47,807 tons of rubber.
