[24 Dec] India April-September Synthetic Rubber Output Up 3.4%

India's synthetic rubber production rose in the April-September period due to higher output of styrene butadiene rubber, which is mostly used in tire production.

Output rose 3.4% on year to 52,988 metric tons in the first six months of the financial year that began April 1, the state-run Rubber Board said Wednesday.

Synthetic rubber production in India is dominated by Reliance Industries Ltd. (500325.BY), which mainly produces poly butadiene rubber.

Production of styrene butadiene rubber during the period totaled 8,738 tons compared with 6,995 tons a year earlier, while poly butadiene output fell to 35,189 tons from 36,700 tons.

The country's synthetic rubber consumption rose 6.7% to 158,515 tons due to rising demand from tire manufacturers, it said on its Web site.

Styrene butadiene consumption rose to 62,980 tons from 57,750 tons, while poly butadiene demand during the period was 48,210 tons compared with 44,885 tons a year earlier.

Demand from tire manufacturers during April-September rose 8% to 107,378 tons, the board said.

Rising consumption also led to higher imports, which rose 6.3% to 113,030 tons during the period. The country imports all of its butyl and styrene-butadiene rubber requirements.

Synthetic rubber stocks at the end of September totaled 33,170 tons, the board said.
