NEW DELHI: India’s natural rubber consumption increased 16.41 per cent to 79,500 tonnes in December 2009 on the back of high demand from the tyre industry.
The country had consumed 68,290 tonnes in the same month previous year, a Rubber Board official said.
However, natural rubber production fell 2.2 per cent in December 2009 to 98,000 tonnes due to adverse weather conditions and lower tapping from old trees in some areas. Production in December 2008 stood at 1,00,225 tonnes.
“Increase in consumption during December 2009 compared to last year was due to the increase in rubber consumption in the tyre sector, especially in truck and bus tyre segment,” the official said.
The official said the import of the commodity has increased marginally to 4,890 tonnes, up from 3,426 tonnes in December 2008.
India exported 1,090 tonnes of natural rubber in December 2009 against 3,131 tonnes in the same month previous year.
“The export of natural rubber has decreased, as there was no demand in the international market and the domestic price is higher than the international price,” he said. — PTI
