Auto sales in Brazil declined substantially at the start of the year when compared to December, but were up from a year earlier according to figures published Wednesday by the National Automotive Dealership Association, Fenabrave.
Car and light truck sales dropped 21% in the first two weeks of the month to 98,395 vehicles, but are still up 4% when compared to January 2009.
The 2009 comparison is important because car sales broke records last year to total 3.1 million units, according to the automakers association Anfavea.
According to Fenabrave, Fiat SpA led the market with a 23.8% market share while General Motors surpassed Volkswagen AG with a 22% share compared to Volkswagen's 21% in the car market.
The Volkswagen Gol remained the No. 1 selling model in Brazil, with 7,928 units sold the first half of the month.
Expectations are for another record breaking year for Brazil's top auto makers, according to Anfavea.
