SUNGAI BULOH, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- Continued research and technology transfer will be crucial in the progress of the Malaysian rubber industry and its aim to contribute RM70 billion to the gross national income (GNI) by 2020.
Last year, the industry contributed RM25 billion to GNI.
"To achieve the target, three main programmes have been identified, namely upstream, processing and downstream activities," said Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok at the official launch of the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB)'s Technology Transfer Day 2010 here Tuesday.
Urging for more R&D activities and commercialisation of quality products, the minister also called for the usage for latest methods of production to retain the industry's edge, while keeping research as market-oriented, client-driven and impactful to the industry.
The MRB today also signed agreements with FELDA, MARDEC and Sekhar Research Innovation Sdn Bhd (SRI) as part of efforts to increase R & D in the industry and towards commercialisation of research products at the international level.
The deal with FELDA and MARDEC covered technology transfer for ekoprena and pureprena which is produced by the MRB.
The ekoprena and pureprena, products from research done by MRB, is used specifically for the production of environment-friendly tyres for the global market.
The agreement with SRI meanwhile was more for the provision of equipment and laboratory for SRI's research in helping with the development of the industry in the country.
SRI is a research centre which focuses on cleantech solutions for tire recycling technologies.
