Malaysia: Dompok on rubber, oil palm mission to US

Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok is leading a palm oil and rubber working visit to the United States from May 22 to 25.

The itinerary of the visit includes a joint Malaysia-Indonesia Ministerial mission to promote palm oil.

The mission covers meeting with the US Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy and United States Trade Representative and Roundtable Dialogue with NGOs, industry leaders and government representatives.

The objectives of the visits are to have a dialogue with United States cabinet ministers, industry associations and Non-Governmental Organisation on the sustainability of palm oil.

It is also to inform on measures undertaken by Malaysia and Indonesia on sustainable production of palm oil and promote the image of palm oil among the consumers and regulators in the United States.

Also included is the discussion with US-Asean Business Council.

In addition, Dompok would also visit the IOI Loders Croklaan Plant in Chicago, a facility of a joint-venture between a Malaysian plantation company, IOI Corporation and Loders Croklaan.

The United States is a major market for commodity related products, in the case of palm oil, the United States is the fourth largest export destination for Malaysia's palm oil, accounting for 6.4 per cent of global exports.

Last year, Malaysia exported palm oil and palm oil products valued at RM4.39 billion, an increase of 40.7 per cent compared to RM3.12 billion in 2009.

In addition to palm oil products, other commodity related products exported to the United States in 2010 includes timber products valued at RM2.57 billion, rubber products at RM4.02 billion, cocoa products valued at RM1.01 billion and pepper products valued at RM4.94 million.
