Rubber seedlings in high demand

KENINGAU: Rubber seedlings are selling like hot cakes in Keningau due to the increasing price of the commodity in the market.

A high quality rubber seedling can be sold for up to RM5 compared to RM3.50 previously.

Other types of rubber seedlings can cost RM4.80 each or RM3 each for a random breed.

A year ago, seedlings that were simply uprooted from rubber estates or found growing in the wild cost 60 sen each.

The interest in oil palm cultivation has waned over the past year since rubber prices surged.

Assistant Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Sairin Karno has suggested more nurseries to produce rubber seedlings in Keningau saying that it was increasingly difficult to find the seedlings in this district.

He claimed that even the Sabah Rubber Industrial Board was unable to meet the demand among rubber smallholders.
