Rubber Unaffected by Earthquake in Indonesia

Indonesian rubber supplies in Sumatra were not likely to be affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the island early yesterday morning, according to a source from the North Sumatra chapter of the Rubber Association of Indonesia.

The quake which struck around 5.15 a.m., was centred 200 km. west-northwest of the coastal town of Sibolga and was at a depth of 31 km. The epicentre was around 215 km. from Medan, the largest city on Sumatra.

The quake had caused power blackouts in both Medan and Banda Aceh, the provincial capital but but there was no immediate reports of damage.

There were no reports of delays in shipments of rubber from the Belawan port which is one of Indonesia’s main export ports for commodities and sits on the Straits of Malacca. The port was reported to be operating normally after the quake.

Indonesia is the world’s second largest for rubber producer after Thailand. -
